It's going to be a big one

We're going on a bush walk. Swing on a vine, hop across a creek, splash through a waterfall, scramble up a mountain and climb a great big tree. It's a wonderful day in the bush, until a little explorer feels a familiar wriggle and realises there is no toilet for miles.

Uh oh. Time for a bush wee!

The Bush Wee is a giggly, rhythmic read aloud adventure that turns one of every toddler's biggest outdoor worries into the funniest part of the day. Its bouncing, repeating refrain is written for little ones to chant along to, so it suits any child who loves We're Going on a Bear Hunt and any family that loves getting outdoors.

What children learn along the way

The bush skills in the story are real ones:

  • which soft leaves make good bush toilet paper, like ferns, gum leaves, hardenbergia and bottlebrush
  • which stinging leaves and nettles to stay away from
  • why your bum should point downwind and downhill

It helps children feel brave and capable in the bush, leeches and all.

Who it is for

  • toddlers and preschoolers aged 2 to 5
  • newly independent early readers aged 4 to 7
  • bushwalking, camping and nature loving families
  • children working on toilet independence and confidence outdoors
  • grandparents, aunties and uncles looking for a funny gift

About me

I am a keen local bushwalker. I have volunteered with the Gosford SES and Bush Search and Rescue, and I walk with the NSW Central Coast Bushwalkers. By day I am the director of Good Architect, a Central Coast practice specialising in sustainable design and waterproofing remediation.

The bush in this book is inspired by walks on Darkinung Country here on the Central Coast. If you would like to take your own little explorer on a real walk, start with my guide to the best Central Coast bushwalks for kids. If you spot someone on the track dressed mostly in yellow, it is probably me, so say hello.
