Tuggerah Medical Centre

Designing a medical centre inside a shopping centre presents a particular tension: the space needs to feel calm and professional while meeting the stringent fitout standards of a commercial landlord. At Westfield Tuggerah, every material, every fixture and every detail had to satisfy both the centre management's requirements and the expectations of patients who arrive feeling anxious about their health.

The floor plan is organised around a central reception area that gives clear sightlines to the waiting zone and the corridor leading to consultation rooms. Patients can see where they need to go from the moment they walk in, which reduces the anxiety that comes from navigating an unfamiliar medical space. The reception desk is positioned lower than standard retail counters, making it approachable for elderly patients and those in wheelchairs without feeling like a barrier between staff and visitors.

Consultation rooms are where the design really matters. Each room is acoustically treated so that conversations cannot be overheard from the corridor or adjacent rooms, which is fundamental to patient privacy but often overlooked in commercial fitouts. Natural tones on the walls, warm timber laminate on the joinery and soft, even lighting create rooms that feel more like a considered interior than a clinical box. The examination areas have task lighting that doctors can adjust, while the patient seating area has gentler ambient light.

Clean lines run throughout the fitout. There are no unnecessary decorative elements, no feature walls competing for attention. The palette is restrained: white, warm grey and natural timber, with the practice's branding applied sparingly at the entrance and reception. Wayfinding signage is clear, consistent and positioned at the height where people actually look when they are searching for a room number. The result is a medical space that puts patients at ease the moment they step inside, which is arguably the most important thing any healthcare environment can achieve.
