Charmhaven Sustainable Retrofit
Vinod and Vinya came to me with a home that was structurally sound but thermally uncomfortable and disconnected from its garden. Rather than knocking it down and starting over, we chose to retrofit: keeping the bones of the existing house and reworking it into something that performs beautifully and feels completely different to live in.
The first step was understanding where the house was losing and gaining heat. I mapped the solar paths across the site through every season, identifying which walls received punishing western sun in summer and which rooms never saw sunlight in winter. The retrofit strategy was built from this analysis. We opened the north side of the house with new glazing to capture winter sun, added external shading to the west to block summer heat, and improved insulation throughout the roof and walls.

Passive solar design guided every decision. Thermal mass in the form of a polished concrete floor in the living areas absorbs winter sunlight during the day and releases warmth through the evening. Cross ventilation paths were created by repositioning windows and adding operable highlights, allowing the house to breathe naturally on warm evenings instead of relying on air conditioning. The result is a home that stays comfortable year round with a fraction of the energy bills.
Beyond the thermal improvements, we reconfigured the interior layout to connect the kitchen, living and dining areas to the garden. New doors open onto a covered outdoor area that extends the living space and gives the family a place to eat outside through most of the year. The material selections, chosen for durability and low maintenance, honour the original structure while making it clear that something transformative has happened. For Vinod and Vinya, this was about taking a house that worked against them and turning it into one that works with them.
